Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Second Period Troubles Knights in Loss to Wilkes

ASTON, Pa. – After giving up seven goals in the middle period on Friday night, the Neumann University Men's Ice Hockey team were dealt a 9-3 loss by the Wilkes University Colonels in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play.

The first period started out as a back-and-forth defensive display with neither team reaching double digits in shots. It took until the last minute before the offense would start to show as Wilkes scored with 53 seconds left in the period. Neumann had a lightning quick response as PJ Demitrio scored his third goal of the year just 22 seconds later. Wyatt Wong and Tyson Rohrer earned the assists as the game was evened at one.

After the intermission, the Colonels would turn on the pressure and retook the lead at the 3:29 mark of the second. Wilkes scored two more times in the next 1:29 for a 4-1 lead. The Colonels again struck for two quickly, nabbing two power-play goals, 58 seconds apart, at the 10 minute mark. They would achieve a similar feat, scoring two in 1:06, for a commanding 8-1 lead.

With under two minutes left in the period, Ben Gibbons struck for the Knights, picking up his second of the season. Cameron Hatziioannou was credited with the lone assist to close out the period. Chase Cochran grabbed his third goal of the year on a power play goal, 2:33 into the third period, pulling the Knights with five. Tyler Kulas and Nate Dunning had the assists but Wilkes would close out the scoring with 8:32 remaining in regulation.

In addition to his helper, Dunning would push the pace with six shots on goal. Logan Gorbitz and Cole DeFazio split the game between the pipes. Gorbitz got the start, making 14 saves while, DeFazio closed with 22 stops.

Neumann (6-18, 4-15 UCHC) will return to action tomorrow afternoon for Senior Day, once again against Wilkes. The action gets started at 4pm as the Knights close out the season.
