ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann men's basketball team battled in a pair of matches as it hosted Immaculata University and St. Elizabeth University on Saturday.
In the first match with the Mighty Macs, the Knights fell 3-2. Immaculata won the first two sets: 25-19 and 25-22. Neumann took the third set 25-22 before the Mighty Macs won the match with a 25-15 fourth set win.
Veryl Burns led the Knights with 16 kills.
Manny Waugh tallied 10 kills and
TJ McConnell added eight.
Christian Johnson handed out 31 assists.
Isaiah Raye-Ryan notched 11 digs and
Brandon Baskerville added 10.
Leading 11-10 in the first set, the Mighty Macs tallied five straight points to take a 16-10 advantage. The Knights pulled back to within four, 22-18, on three consecutive kills by Waugh. Immaculata then scored three of the next four points for the 25-19 win.
The second set went back and forth, and the teams were knotted at 20. Immaculata was able to score five points first for the 25-22 set two win.
In the third set, the Knights built a 19-10 advantage. The Mighty Macs battled back and pulled to within two, 23-21, but on a kill by Burns, sealed the 25-22 set three win to force a fourth set.
Immaculata opened the fourth set by scoring the first six points. The Mighty Macs kept the pressure on and took the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
In the final match, St. Elizabeth won 3-0 by set scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-15. Waugh tallied nine kills while McConnell added seven. Johnson dished out 18 assists. Baskerville notched 12 digs.
The teams battled back and forth in the first set. With a 21-20 score, the Eagles tallied four straight points for the 25-20 set win. Set two was much of the same. Down 23-18, the Knights scored four straight points, including two service aces by Raye-Ryan, to pull within one 23-22. A Waugh kill made the score 24-23, but St. Elizabeth scored the 25
th point before Neumann could pull even.
Neumann (3-11) heads to Wilson on Tuesday. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
