Men’s Basketball to Host Griffins in Semifinals

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team is the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic East postseason and will host No. 3 seeded Gwynedd Mercy University in a semifinal game on Wednesday evening.
 
The Knights finished the regular season 19-6 overall and 9-2 in the conference. The Griffins went 14-12 overall and 7-5 in the conference to sit as the No. 3 seed. Gwynedd Mercy defeated Marywood in first round action on Monday.
 
Neumann swept the season series with Gwynedd Mercy during the regular season. At home, the Knights won 82-79 on a buzzer beater by Ryan Starr. Jalen Vaughns led the Knights with 25 points and nine rebounds. Starr netted 24 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed six rebounds. TJ Lewis put 12 points on the board and Kyle Thompson tallied 10 points off the bench.
 
On the road, the Knights came away with a low-scoring 54-50 win. Tony James led the Knights with a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds. Starr hit three three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Lewis added 10 points, including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. This was the only game of the season Vaughns did not net double-digits, finishing with eight points.
 
For the season, Vaughns leads Neumann, averaging 23.7 points and 10.2 rebounds. Lewis is tallying 12.4 points per game while James adds 10.9. Two more Knights are averaging over nine points a game: Thompson with 9.7 and Starr with 9.3.
 
Starr also set the season record for assists, held by Reggie Coleman in 2013-14 season. The senior currently has 171, breaking 167 set by Coleman.
 
In the other first round game, Immaculata defeated Cabrini and will head to No. 1 seeded Marymount for semifinal action. The winners from Wednesday will meet at the highest remaining seed on Saturday for the 2022-23 Men's Basketball Championship.
