MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Neumann University Baseball team, on their annual spring break trip, suffered an 8-5 loss to Manchester University on Monday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning, Manchester took a 3-0 lead after two, thanks to a two-run triple and a balk. In the third,
Shawn Vega led off with a walk and stole second.
Tyler Kilmer then grounded out but Vega scored on an error, to put the Knights on the board.
Ryan Lopez started off the top of the fourth by tripling.
Andrew Curran drove him home on an RBI single and Neumann trailed by just one. In the bottom of the frame, with the bases loaded, the Spartans cleared the bases with a three-run double, and they led by a score of 6-2.
In the sixth, Neumann started to chip away at the deficit.
Isaiah Payton reached first on an error, then Lopez and Curran walked to load the bases.
Brandon Colon forced in Payton after he reached on an error and two batters later,
Nick Glebocki drove in a run by reaching on a fielder's choice. Vega would follow with an RBI single, driving in Curran and the Knights pulled back within a run. In the bottom of the inning, Manchester pushed it right back to a three-run lead on the strength of a three-run homer. From there, the offense went stagnant and the last three innings went scoreless.
Lopez finished a 2 for 3 game with a triple, a walk, and two runs scored. Vega was 2 for 4 with a walked, two stolen bases, an RBI, and a run scored.
Nick Colon went six innings and was dealt the loss, but
