ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team used a last second free throw to defeat Marymount University 63-62 to split the season series on Wednesday evening in an Atlantic East Conference contest.
Jalen Vaughns notched a double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds.
Tony James tallied eight points.
Justin Smith grabbed nine boards.
Ryan Starr handed out eight assists.
A layup-and-one by Starr with 2:41 left in regulation tied the game at 60. The Saints sank two free throws with 25 seconds remaining, giving the Knights the ball with the shot clock off. As time was winding down, Vaughns grabbed his own rebound and putback the ball to tie the game at 62. The junior was fouled on the play and sank the free throw for the one-point advantage with eight seconds on the clock. The Saints advanced to center court and took a timeout. Marymount was not able to get a shot off in the final four seconds and Neumann held on for the 63-62 win.
The Knights opened the game by scoring the first seven points and built a double-digit lead, 19-8, midway through the first half. Neumann's largest lead was 15, 23-8, coming with 8:57 left in the first. Marymount then went on a 14-0 run to pull within one, 23-22. A three-pointer by
Kyle Thompson broke Neumann's scoreless drought. With 44 seconds left before halftime, the Saints took their first lead. Vaughns hit a jumper just before halftime and the Knights took a 30-29 advantage into the break.
The Saints came out of the break and built a double-digit lead, 55-44, midway through the second half. Down 58-46, the Knights went on a 9-0 run, starting with a dunk by
TJ Lewis. After the Saints broke the run,
Ja'bri White answered right back with a layup for a 60-57 score. Starr then tied the game at 60 to set up the final minute of action.
Neumann (16-6, 6-3 Atlantic East) will travel to Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday for an Atlantic East Conference matchup beginning at 3:00 PM.
