Offensive Explosion Leads to Knights Win over Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team used an 11 run fourth inning to power their way to a 23-12 non-conference win over Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Brandon Colon led off the game with a single to right-center field and Tyler Kilmer followed with a walk. Shawn Vega would score Colon on an RBI single for a 1-0 Knights lead. With Ryan Lopez at the plate, Vega and Kilmer executed a double-steal with Kilmer scoring from third. After a passed ball moved Vega to third, he scored when Lopez doubled for a three-run lead after a half-inning.
 
Lancaster Bible immediately responded with a solo home run to open the bottom of the first. A two-run single later in the frame tied the game up at three. In the second, the Chargers took a two-run lead thanks to an RBI single and an RBI groundout.
 
Kilmer led off the third inning with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error. Vega walked and Lopez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Two batters later, Kilmer scored on a wild pitch then Isaiah Payton singled in Lopez, tying the game at five apiece.
 
In top of the fourth, the Knights broke the game open. Brandon Colon led off with a single, Kilmer walked, and Vega was hit by a pitch to fill the bases. Colon scored on a wild pitch and Kilmer scored on an error, allowing Lopez to reach. Thomas Elgrim drove in Vega and two batters later Payton plated Lopez on a sacrifice fly. Elgrim would then score on an error and then Nick Glebocki would make it to first on another error, again loading the bases. Andrew Curran scored on yet another error and Kilmer drew a bases-loaded walk. Vega followed with an RBI single and an Elgrim walk, Curran and Payton were also issued free passes with the bases loaded. In all, 17 men came to the plate and 11 runs scored, giving Neumann a 16-5 lead.
 
Lancaster Bible pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout to pull within 10. Following a run-less fifth, Payton and pinch-hitter AJ Nardo each walked with one out in the top of the sixth. After an out, Brandon Colon blasted his first home run of the season to extend the lead to 19-6. The Chargers plated two more runs in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and a passed ball, pulling them within 11.
 
Vega led off the seventh with a single and both Josh Finger and Elgrim walked. Cristian Diaz was then hit by a pitch to bring in Vega. Nardo then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center to plate Finger and after a Glebocki walk, Brandon Colon hit an RBI single for a 22-8 lead at the stretch. In the top of the eighth, Vega rocketed his first long ball of the season to add to the Knights' advantage. The Chargers put together a four-run bottom of the eighth inning starting with an RBI double. They then had an RBI single, a bases-loaded walk, and an RBI single, making it an 11-run deficit.
 
Brandon Colon was 4 for 7 with a home run, three RBI, and four runs scored. Vega was 5 for 5 with a home run, a double, a walk, four runs batted in, and six runs scored. Kilmer was 2 for 2 with three walks, two stolen bases, an RBI, and four runs scored. Nate Griffin earned the win with a five-inning start. He's now 1-1.
 
Neumann (4-6) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Widener University. First pitch from Bruder Field is scheduled for 3:30pm
