Late Surge Troubles Knights Against Widener

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team gave up eight runs in the last three innings to drop a 13-9 decision to the Widener Pride in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.
 
After a scoreless first inning, Widener took the lead on an RBI double. In the bottom of the second, Andrew Curran led off with a double then Isaiah Payton bunted for a hit and advanced to second on a bad throw allowing Curran to score, evening the game at one. The Pride retook the lead in the top of the third on an RBI single.
 
Tyler Kilmer started the bottom of the inning with a walk and Shawn Vega reached on an infield single. Ryan Lopez pushed a single through the right side to score Kilmer, once again tying the game. After Thomas Elgrim walked to load the bases, Vega scored on a passed ball to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
 
Widener scored three runs in the fifth on two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly for a two run lead. Vega started the bottom of the frame with a double down the line. After he moved to third on a wild pitch, he scored on an error, pulling the Knights within one. Two batter later, Payton walked and Alec Silverman hit an RBI single to even the game at five.
 
Brandon Colon led off the sixth with a double to right. Two batters later, Vega drove him home with an RBI single and Elgrim followed with an RBI double to left making it a 7-5 Neumann lead. The teams traded runs in the seventh when the Pride scored on a passed ball and Brandon Colon scored as part of a double steal.
 
The Pride came right back in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI single, a bases loaded walk, and a hit by pitch. Neuman equalized the game at nine with their own walk with the bases loaded. In the ninth, in another situation with runners on all bases, Widener hit a grand slam to take the lead for good.
 
Vega led the Knights with a 3 for 5 game. He added a double, a walk, a stolen base, an RBI, and three runs scored. Brandon Colon was 2 for 5 with a double, a walk, three stolen bases, and two runs scored. Jack Valentine suffered the loss to fall to 0-1.
 
Neumann (4-7) will be back in action on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader against Manhattanville College. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1pm.
