Baseball Falls Twice at Cabrini

RADNOR, Pa. – In the tale of two completely different games, the Neumann University Baseball team were swept in an Atlantic East doubleheader at the hands of Cabrini University on Sunday afternoon by scores of 2-1 and 22-11.

Game one was an absolute pitcher's duel as Cabrini got the game started with a solo home run in the first. The contest went scoreless until the final inning when, with two away, Nick Glebocki singled and Brandon Colon drove him in with an RBI double to right, to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Knights, an RBI single in the bottom of the frame earned the game one win for the Cavaliers.

Jonathan Baker suffered the complete game loss to drop to 1-4 on the year. He gave up just one earned run on five hits and two walks, while striking out two in his six innings of work. Brandon Colon led the offense with a 3 for 4 game with a double and an RBI. Jack Valentine went 2 for 3 as Neumann outhit Cabrini by a nine to five margin.

Once again, for game two, it was Cabrini that struck first, but this time it was an eight-run inning. A two-run single, a three-run homer, another two-run single, and an RBI single helped the Cavaliers to a large advantage after one inning. With one out in the second, Neumann's Isaiah Payton singled to center and Curran walked. Two batters later, Glebocki got the Knights on the board with an RBI single. Brandon Colon followed with his own base hit, plating two, and the deficit was down to five.

Cabrini got those three runs back in the third with an RBI double to left, and a two-run single, for an 11-3 lead. In the top of the fourth, Payton, Curran, Thomas Elgrim, and Glebocki all singled. The last two resulted in runs scored, pulling Neumann within six. Again, the Cavaliers answered with another three-run outburst.

In the top of the fifth, Ryan Lopez doubled into left field and Payton walked. After a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet, Curran singled to center to score them both. Cabrini added four more runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double and a three-run home run for an 18-7 lead. Neumann pulled a run closer in the seventh when Payton scored on an error but Cabrini pushed across four more runs after the stretch.

Morgan D'Amico led off the ninth with a walk and scored on Payton's two-run blast over the left-centerfield wall, his second homer of the season. Three batters later, Glebocki went yard with a shot over the big screen in left for his first of the year, closing out the scoring.

Payton was a perfect 4 for 4 with a homer, a walk, two runs batted in, and five runs scored. Glebocki was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3 for 5 with a home run, a double, 3 RBI, and two runs scored. Curran, Brandon Colon, and Lopez also had multi-hit games, each nabbing two hits apiece. On the pitching side, Joe Longo was solid in mop-up duty as he went the final two innings, allowing two hits and fanning three.

Neumann (6-11, 0-2 Atlantic East) will try to salvage the finale of this three-game set against Cabrini on Monday afternoon. First pitch from Bruder Field is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
