TYSONS, Va. – The Neumann University Baseball team headed down south to start a three game Atlantic East Conference series, falling by a 9-1 score to the Marymount University Saints on Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning,
Chris Balshuweit hit a one-out triple into centerfield.
Andrew Curran drove him home on a groundout giving the Knights a 1-0 lead. Marymount tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single.
The game stayed tied at one until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Saints exploded for eight runs to take the lead for good. Marymount loaded the bases with nobody out when a hit-by-pitch made it a 2-1 game. Then, a sacrifice fly, two two-run singles, an RBI double, and an RBI single put the game out of reach.
Shawn Vega led the offense with a 3 for 4 day, eclipsing the 100-hit mark for his collegiate career, adding a double. Balshuweit went 2 for 3 with a triple and a run scored.
Brandon Colon contributed with a 2 for 4 performance.
Jonathan Baker had a strong start but picked up a no-decision. In his seven innings, he allowed one hit on five hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Jack Valentine suffered the loss relief to drop to 1-2.
Neumann (12-17, 3-7 Atlantic East) will be back in action on Saturday to conclude this weekend's three-game Atlantic East Conference series against the Marymount Saints. Game one of tomorrow's doubleheader is scheduled for an 11:30 AM start.
