ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team defeated the Eastern University Eagles on a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The final score in six innings was 6-3.
The game started off with Eastern scoring in the first on an RBI single. They doubled their lead in the second using a bases loaded walk. Neumann came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at two.
Andrew Curran led off with an infield single and stole second. After a
Josh Finger walk,
Isaiah Payton reached on a fielder's choice. Two batter later,
Thomas Elgrim reached on an error and Finger scored. On a delayed double-steal, Payton scored to even the game.
In the third,
Nick Glebocki and
Shawn Vega each singled. They executed a double steal, but the catcher threw the ball to centerfield, allowed Glebocki to score on the error.
Chris Balshuweit followed with a single and he stole second base. Curran doubled the Knights lead with an RBI single, scoring Vega.
After a nearly two-hour weather delay, play resumed, and Neumann continued to add on to the lead. With one out in the fifth, Curran walked. After a fly out, Payton singled and
Morgan D'Amico drove them both in with a double to right-center, making it a 6-2 game. The Eagles pulled within three in the sixth with and RBI single but that is as close as they would come as the game was shortened due to darkness.
D'Amico led the way with a 1 for 3 game with a double and two runs batted in. Curran reached base twice, going 1 for 2 with a walk, a stolen base, an RBI, and a run scored.
JerVal Shuler picked up the win to improve to 1-2 on the year. He allowed two runs over four innings, on three hits and five walks.
Gatlin Hovenstine picked up his first save, hurling two innings, allowing a run on two hits while fanning two.
Neumann (14-19, 4-8 Atlantic East) will be back in action on Thursday when they visit the Marywood Pacers to start a three-game Atlantic East series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
