Men’s Soccer Battles with La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Soccer team took a trip to the city to challenge Division One's La Salle University, being dealt a 5-0 loss on a crisp Monday night.

La Salle got on the board in 14th minute as the ball bounced into the box and was half-volleyed in. The Explorers continued to keep the Knights pinned but Jake Kuzmick, in the 21st minute, made a sharp cut to get into the box. He took a hard, high shot but it was tipped over the crossbar by the goalkeeper. Neumann was buoyed by that chance and started to carry some of the play but in the 34th minute, La Salle countered, came in on a break and doubled their lead. Only a Carson Metzger diving stop in the 42nd minute kept the score the same heading into the halftime break.

The second half was much like the first with Neumann on their back foot, with the occasional attack, but in the 62nd minute, the Explorers were able to pounce on a mistouched ball for the 3-0 lead. La Salle struck again in the 71st minute when a corner was headed into the goal, and again a minute later. Late in the match, Vince Landis headed a ball towards the goal. The goalkeeper got a piece of it and it trickled to the goal line but was cleared before it crossed. The Explorers added their final goal in the 87th minute on a headed cross.

Justin Ruffino came off the bench and led the Knights with two shots. Metzger made six saves in the first half and Jackson Laznik made seven stops in the second.

Neumann (5-5-4, 2-0 Atlantic East) will return to action on Wednesday when they host the Atlantic East Conference's newest team, the Pratt Institute Cannoneers. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
