Donohoe Hat Trick Leads to Men’s Hockey Win

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Hockey team picked up their fifth win in a row as they defeated Alvernia University, 5-4 in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game on Friday night

Although the Knights carried much of the play early on, it was Alvernia that got on the scoreboard first as they took a 1-0 lead with 10:14 left in the first period. Five minutes later, PJ Demitrio led a 2-on-1 into the Golden Wolves zone. As he moved in, he saucered a pass across to Tyler Ray who tucked home his third goal of the season to tie the game.

Early in the middle period, it was 4-on-4 on the ice but the Knights took the advantage. Sonny DiNubile broke into the zone and threw a blind spinning pass to Max Donohoe who went to the backhand, giving Neumann a 2-1 lead just 2:15 in. The Golden Wolves tied the game at the 11:14 mark while on a major power play, but it didn't take long for Neumann to regain the lead. 51 seconds later, DiNubile moved in on a shorthanded breakaway and snuck in his third of the year. The Knights doubled their lead with 4:43 left in the period on a power play goal by Donohoe and he lifted in his own rebound for his second of the game, and a 4-2 lead.

The Golden Wolves wouldn't go down without a fight as they pulled within one, six minutes into the third. At the halfway point of the period, Tyler Kennedy found the puck in the slot. His shot was saved but the rebound landed right on Donohoe's stick and he went through the legs of the goalie for his third of the game and fifth of the season, to make it 5-3. Alvernia scored with 5.1 seconds left but Neumann secured the win.

In addition to the hat trick, Donohoe had six shots on goal to lead the Knights. DiNubile had a two-point game to go with his six shots. PJ Demitrio helped with four shots on goal while Matt Dimaline was key in the faceoff dot, winning 14 of his 18 draws. Cole DeFazio earned the win in goal with 34 saves.

Neumann (7-0-2, 5-0-2), who earned their first-ever win against Alvernia, will try to sweep the weekend with a Saturday afternoon tilt starting at 4:00 PM.
