Men’s Volleyball Fights Off Cairn for Win

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Volleyball team defeated Cairn University in a non-conference match on Thursday night, 3-0.

The first set started off back-and-forth with neither squad taking more than a two point lead early on. With Neumann trailing 9-8, they went on a quick 6-1 run for a 14-10 lead. The Knights maintained that lead throughout the set, extending the lead to six taking four of five points, taking the score to 20-14. Cairn was able to pull within three on a 5-2 run, but Neumann scored the last three points to take the set.

Much like the first, things stayed close early in the second set but, with the score even at five, the Knights, went on a 6-1 run for an 11-6 advantage. With Neumann leading 17-10, the Highlanders called a timeout and used that to go on a 5-1 one, pulling within three at 18-15. The Knights went on the take a 22-17 lead as Cairn tried to slow the momentum with another timeout. Although the Highlanders scored three of the next four, Neumann was able to close out the set for a dominating lead in the match.

Cairn had an early 2-1 lead in the third, but Neumann scored four in row for a 5-2 lead. The Highlanders fought right back with a 7-4 run for a 9-8 lead. A 4-1 run by the Knights got them back on top by one but Cairn got six of the next eight points for 16-14 lead, forcing a Neumann timeout. The break did little to help as Cairn continued control the set, scoring the next six point for a 22-14 advantage. Although the Knights went on a 8-3 run, it was not enough to stop a fourth set.

In the fourth, no team went on more than a three point run until the game was even at 17. From there, the Knights went on an 8-2 run to take the set and the match.

Trey Edmonds led the offensive attack with 22 kills, 10 digs, and a .588 hitting percentage. Victor John helped out with 10 kills. Dan Barckholtz ended the match with 45 assists, four service aces, and two blocks. Veryl Burns also had two blocks to go with his six kills.

Neumann(7-5, 1-1 Atlantic East) will return to the court on Tuesday, February 27th for a battle with Hood College. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start at the Mirenda Center.
