ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team could not overcome a seven run deficit in their first Atlantic East game of the season against Marymount University on Friday afternoon, falling by a score of 7-5.
After a scoreless first inning, Marymount got on the board in the the second with two RBI singles. They added to their lead in the top of the third using an RBI double, a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, a run-scoring fielders choice, an RBI single, and a run-scoring sacrifice bunt.
The Knights' offense finally got started in the bottom of the inning, using a two-out rally.
AJ Nardo got on base via a fielder's choice and advanced to third when
Joe Boccio double.
Brandon Colon drove them both in with a single through the left side of the infield, pulling Neumann within five.
In the sixth,
Josh Finger led off with a single,
Marcus White singled, and
Thomas Elgrim walked to load the bases. Mason flew out to the left field corner, scoring Finger on the sacrifice fly. White would then score as
Nick Glebocki reached on an error by the shortstop. After Nardo was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Boccio drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Neumann squander chances in the final three innings, stranding five over that time, and 13 throughout the game.
Both Boccio and Mason went 2 for 4 on the game with Boccio adding a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Mason also had an RBI. White went 2 for 5 with a run scored as well. After a rough second and third inning,
Aidan Jackson settled down to complete six innings, but was handed the loss.
Morgan D'Amico gave up just one hit over the last three innings, giving the Knights a chance to get back into the game.
Neumann (8-6, 0-1 Atlantic East) will continue this three game conference series on Sunday down in Virginia against Marymount. First pitch for the first game is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
