MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Neumann University Baseball suffered a 12-2 loss at the hands of Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Day Three of their Spring Break trip on Wednesday afternoon, breaking up a three-game win streak.
Neumann got things rolling early as
Matt Mason singled to right with one away.
Joe Boccio rocketed a double to left-center, plating Mason for an early lead.
Isaiah Payton with an RBI double down the right field line to score Boccio and give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Worcester responded in the bottom of the inning, with a two-run double, an RBI groundout, a sacrifice fly, and another two-run double for a 6-2 advantage.
Both pitchers settled down as the next few innings went scoreless. In the fourth, Worcester made it a five run game thanks to a dropped fly leading to a run. Three more runs came in on two bases loaded walks and an RBI ground out, pulling ahead 10-2. The Engineers scored another run in the sixth on an RBI single. They added another run on a solo home run in the seventh.
AJ Nardo led the offense going 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. Payton was 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI, while Boccio was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
Michael Whitmore was dealt the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk, and he struck out one, over three innings of work. He falls to 0-1.
Neumann(3-3) continues their Spring Break trip with a 12:30 PM tilt against Penn State- Berks tomorrow afternoon.
