MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Neumann University Baseball team defeat Penn State Berks by a final score of 12-6 on Thursday afternoon, as part of their 2024 Spring Break trip.
The Knights got rolling immediately as, with one out,
Matt Mason hit an infield single and moved to second when
Zion Spearman reached on an error.
Brandon Colon ripped a single to center to score Mason and moved Spearman to third. After an
AJ Nardo walk loaded the bases,
Andrew Curran cleared them with a triple to center field, giving Neumann a 4-0 lead.
Colton Schaub led off the second with his first collegiate hit, an infield single.
Nick Glebocki moved him to second when he singled into left. Two batters later, Spearman walked and then B. Colon drove in two with a double to deep centerfield. Curran was then hit by a pitch and, with
Josh Finger at the plate, both B. Colon and Spearman would score on an error, making it an eight run game.
Shaub led off the top of the third with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Glebocki then hit an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Shaub. Penn State Berks got on the board in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI single. In the fourth,
Josh Finger reached on a fielder's choice and two batters later, Shaub drove him in with a triple to the left centerfield gap, for a 10-1 lead.
The Nittany Lions started to chip away at the lead in the fifth with an RBI infield single. In the sixth, they scored a run on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout. In the seventh, they added runs on a stolen base and an groundout, pulling within four.
Josh Finger led off the eighth when a single to left and
Anthony Rakotz followed with a bunt base hit, and Shaub loaded the bases with a single to left.
Marcus White drove in the Knights' 11
th run when Finger scored on his sacrifice fly. With one out in the ninth,
Trevor Blacerzak reached on a single up the middle and got to second via a balk. After a
Nick Pagano hit by pitch, Finger drove in the game's final run on an RBI single.
Shaub reached five times, going 3 for 3 with a triple, a stolen base, two walks, an RBI, and two runs scored. B. Colon was 3 for 5 with a double, a walk, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Mason was 3 for 6 with a run scored.
Nick Colon earned the win in relief, going two innings, allowing a run on two hits, and he struck out one.
Neumann(4-3) will close out the spring trip, tomorrow night against Eastern Nazarene College. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
