Baseball Falls to Marywood in Extras

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team suffered a 9-6 11-inning loss against Marywood University on Wednesday afternoon in an Atlantic East Conference match-up.
 
With one out in the first, Matt Mason ripped a triple into right field as came in to score on a wild pitch for an early lead. Mason also led off the third with a walk. Joe Boccio followed with a double down the right field line, moving Mason to third. Andrew Curran followed with an RBI double to plate Mason. Later in the inning, Anthony Rakotz drove in Boccio with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 Knights' lead.
 
With two outs in the fourth, AJ Nardo started a rally with a double into left field. Mason followed by reaching on an error, scoring Nardo to extend the lead further. It took until the seventh, but the Pacers roared back by sending 10 men to the plate, scoring six runs. It was highlighted by four different run scoring singles, giving them a 6-4 lead.
 
Mason again was a catalyst in the bottom of the inning, leading off with a base hit to center. Three batters later, Zion Spearman singled to left and Rakotz pulled Neumann within a run with an RBI single. Josh Finger tied the game with an RBI single of his own. Neither team threatened as they game ended up going to extra innings.
 
Marywood was able to break through in the 11th with an RBI double, an RBI single, and another run scoring on an error. Mason reached to start the bottom of the inning but the offense stalled from there.
 
Mason finished 4 for 5, a home run shy of a cycle, picking up a double, a triple, a walk, and scoring three times. Curran was 2 for 5 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Rakotz made the best of his one hit and a walk by driving in two runs. Zach Mullins had a solid start, going six scoreless innings on five hits and two walks, fanning one. Aidan Jackson put together a good relief performance, allowing two hits over 2.2 innings.
 
Neumann (11-13, 1-8 Atlantic East) will return to action on Friday when they visit Cabrini University to open a three-game Atlantic East Conference series. First pitch will be at 3:30 PM.
