ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Field Hockey team upended Delaware Valley University in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon in double overtime by a final score of 2-1.
The first quarter went scoreless as Neumann came out slow but started to pressure. The Knights continued to attack and with 1:44 left in the half, they were awarded a penalty corner.
Kaitlyn Smith inserted the ball back into play, connecting the
Michelle Hughes. She crossed it to
Elle Smith who slipped it past the 'keeper for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes into the third quarter, Delaware Valley equalized on a counterattack goal, tying the game at one. For the remainder of regulation, the Aggies were the main aggressor as they outchanced the Knights 15-7. Fortunately for Neumann, they were able to fend off Delaware Valley and force overtime.
The first 10-minute overtime was more of the same as Delaware Valley had three corners to Neumann's one, but the game remained scoreless. In the second overtime, the Knights started to push some offense. With just over six minutes left, Neumann earned a penalty corner.
Natalie Zoffer fired the pass to the top of the circle and
Gabriella Cappelli sent a blast into the goal for her team-leading fifth of the year, setting off the celebration.
Ariel Sprague led the Knights with two shots and one on goal.
Caley Gee started the game in goal and stopped the only shot she faced in 30 minutes.
Emma Schneider came in for the second half and made seven saves for the win.
Neumann (3-4) will return to action on Saturday as they host King's College in their annual Senior Day game. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 start.
