Women’s Volleyball Splits at Tri-Match

CHESTER, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball splits a pair of matches in a tri-match at Widener University on Saturday. The Knights battled in a 3-2 loss to the Pride to open the day and then defeated New Jersey City University 3-0.
 
Against the Pride, Melissa Eddy tallied 14 kills. Taylor Long added 12 kills and a .379 hitting percentage. Nayeli Cruz notched 10 kills. Dani Smith handed out 41 assists and six service aces. Hannah Strohm finished with 16 digs, Smith with 14 and Eddy with 12.
 
Widener took the first set 25-11. Down 14-10 in the second set, the Knights scored the next six for a 16-14 edge. After going back and forth down the stretch, a kill by Eddy gave Neumann the 25-23 win to tie the match at one.
 
Tied at 20 in the third set, the Pride rattled off five of the next six points for the 25-21 win. The teams were knotted at 17 in the fourth set. The Knights scored six of the next eight points for a 23-19 advantage. A Delaney Jack kill gave Neumann the 25-22 win to force the fifth set.
 
The Knights took an early lead in the fifth set. The Pride came back and tied the match at seven. Neumann held a 13-10 edge, but Widener scored the next five points to take the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
 
Julia Solomon hit .382 with 15 kills against the Gothic Knights. Eddy added 10 kills and a .389 hitting percentage. Smith dished out 29 assists. Strohm notched 13 digs and Kyla Sayson added 10.
 
In set one, Emma Dobberstein notched a service ace for put the Knights at set point, 24-16. Neumann took the set 25-17 on a NJCU service error.
 
Set two went back and forth. A Smith service ace got Neumann to set point 24-22. But the Gothic Knights scored the next three points for a 25-24 edge. The Knights answered with the next three points, capped by a service ace by Eddy for the 27-25 win.
 
NJCU opened the third set by taking a 7-2 lead and held the pace of the set. Down 22-15, the Knights scored the next seven points to pull even at 22. The Gothic Knights tallied the next points, but the Knights answered with the next three for the 25-23 set three and 3-0 match win.
 
Neumann (5-8) heads to Wilkes on Wednesday evening beginning at 7:00 PM.
