ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Field Hockey team, playing in their third overtime in their last four games, dropped a 3-2 decision against Virginia Wesleyan University on Monday afternoon.
The Knights fell behind in the early going as they gave up a penalty stroke goal just over 10 minutes in. With 10:01 left in the second quarter, Neumann took full advantage of a penalty corner. The ball was inserted to
Natalia Thomas who moved to the right fired it toward goal. It was deflected in by
Elle Smith for her fourth goal of the year, tying the game.
In the third quarter, the Knights took the lead when, with 5:47 left,
Natalie Zoffer whipped a free hit to
Meghan Sheldrick who one-timed the ball into the corner for her fifth of the year, and a 2-1 lead. The Marlins tied the game with 6:17 left in the fourth, forcing overtime. Eight minutes into the extra period, Virginia Wesleyan got a fortunate deflection after a corner to take the game.
Sheldrick and
Jess Silver led the offense with two shots each, both on goal.
Gabriella Cappelli also took two shots with one reaching the net.
Caley Gee made several key saves to keep the Knights ahead. She finished with 10.
Neumann(3-6) will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host FDU- Florham starting at 1:00 PM.
