Women’s Volleyball Splits for First Win of Season

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Neumann University split a tri-match at Washington College (Md.) on Saturday to pick up its first win of the season.
 
The Knights battled the host Shorewomen and came away with a 3-2 win. Neumann then fell to Stockton University 3-0.
 
Neumann and Washington College went back and forth the entire match. The Knights won sets one, three and five, while the Shorewomen won the second and forth sets.
 
Taylor Long led the Knights with 12 kills. Melissa Eddy tallied 11 kills and Nayeli Cruz added 10. Dani Smith handed out 30 assists. Jenna Jones dished out 14 assists. Hannah Strohm notched 18 digs, Jones had 16 and Smith added 11.
 
The Knights jumped out to a 16-11 lead in the first set. The teams then traded points before Washington rattled off four straight to pull within one, 20-19. A kill by Julia Solomon gave Neumann the 25-22 set one win.
 
Tied at 14 in set two, the Shorewomen scored seven of the next eight points. The Knights pulled to within two twice, but Washington held on for the 25-22 set two win.
 
Neumann held the pace to start set three and took a 21-10 lead. WAC worked its was back to within two, 22-20. A service ace from Kyla Sayson sealed the 25-21 set three win and a 2-1 advantage. Washington held the pace in the fourth set to force a fifth a deciding set, 25-14.
 
The Shorewomen jumped out to a 10-7 advantage in the fifth set. The Knights answered with the next five points, including three kills and a service ace, for a 12-10 edge. The teams traded points and a kill by Long sealed the 15-13 set five win and 3-2 match win.
 
Against Stockton, Neumann fell in three set, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-19. Eddy led the team with 13 kills. Smith dished out 13 assists. Strohm notched eight digs.
 
The Ospreys and the Knights went back and forth in the first set, including three tied scores. Knotted at 11, Stockton built a 20-15 lead. Neumann came back to within one, 20-19, but the Ospreys took set one 25-21. The teams battled in the final two sets, but Stockton came out on top of both for the 3-0 win.
 
Neumann (1-5) will have its first home game of the season when it welcomes Bryn Mawr beginning at 7:00 PM.
