ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's hockey team defeated Misericordia University in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game on Friday night by a final score of 5-1.
Neumann got on the score board early as they moved in on a three-on-two rush and
Tyler Inlow tipped in his sixth goal of the season.
Ben Gibbons and
Tony Andrews earned the assists on they took a 1-0 lead just 2:21 into the game. The rest of the first was quiet as the Knights outshot Misericordia 10-8.
Neumann struck again in the early going of the second period. They moved in on a four-on-one and as
Tyler Ray trailed the play, he received a pass from
Max Donohoe and wristed in his fourth goal of the season to double the advantage. With 1:43 left in the period
Matt Dimaline won an offensive face-off back to
Zack Smith. He dangled in front of the net and slipped the puck in for a 3-0 edge heading into the intermission.
The Cougars were held at bay throughout most of the third period but just as it looked like Neumann would settle for the 3-0 win, Donohoe stole the puck on the forecheck, lifted it to the slot and Smith powered in his second goal of the game and team-leading 10
th of the season. Just over a minute later, Misericordia scored on the power play to break up the shutout.
PJ Demitrio closed the scoring with an empty-netter with 27 seconds left.
In addition to his two-goal game, Smith led with five shots on goal.
Chase Cochran also had five shots while Donohoe had four to go with his two helpers. Dimaline had two assists as well and Demitrio was sharp in the face-off circle winning 18 of his 25 draws.
Logan Gorbitz made 26 saves for his second consecutive win in goal.
Neumann (10-5-2, 7-4-2 MAC) and Misericordia will conclude this weekend's two-game set on Saturday night at 7:00 PM at the IceWorks Skating Complex.
