HADDONFIELD, N.J. – The Atlantic East Conference announced their weekly awards on Monday afternoon, and six Neumann University athlete were among the recognized.
Gabriella Cappelli from the Field Hockey team, and
Jordan Illian of the Men's Soccer team were both named the Player of the Week for their sports. Men's Soccer's
AJ Henry was named to the weekly Honor Roll along with Women's Soccer's
Kyleigh Joniec, and Women's Volleyball's
Kyla Carney and
Melissa Eddy.
Cappelli had a goal and an assist in a 1-1 overall, 1-0 conference week for the Knights. The sophomore tallied two shots in a loss at Widener. To open Atlantic East action, Cappelli assisted on the game-tying goal. She then scored an insurance goal in the fourth quarter for the 3-1 win over Manhattanville. This is her second Player of the Week selection this Fall.
Illian scored four goals and added two assists as Neumann went 2-0 in conference action. In the 4-0 win over Centenary, the junior had five shots, one on net. In a 9-0 win at Pratt, Illian exploded for four goals and two assists on 11 shots, eight on goal. With the Knights leading 1-0, he scored two goals in a minute for a 3-0 lead. Illian added two more goals in the second half. This is his third weekly award of the season and second Player of the Week nod.
Henry picked up two shutouts in 180 minutes in net. The defense allowed eight shots and four on net in the two wins. In the win over Centenary, the senior made two saves. He followed with two saves in the 9-0 win at Pratt. Henry has earned four consecutive shutouts and five this season. He leads the conference in goals against average, save percentage and shutouts. This is his fourth weekly award and third Honor Roll selection.
Joniec scored two goals, including a game-winner, in a 2-0 conference week for Neumann. The senior tied the game at one in the 38th minute. She then scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute in the 3-2 win over Pratt.
Carney handed out 69 assists as Neumann went 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Atlantic East action. In the 3-0 win over Pratt, the sophomore dished out 27 assists and added 11 digs. In the next match of the tri-match, Carney tallied 42 assists and 19 digs in an exciting 3-2 win over Rutgers-Camden.
Eddy hit 25 kills, a .222 hitting percentage and added 48 digs this week for the Knights. The sophomore started with three kills and nine digs in the win over Pratt. In the win over Rutgers-Camden, Eddy tallied 22 kills and 18 digs. The sophomore tallied six kills in an 8-0 run by the Knights in the fifth set. She also had the final kill of the match for the win. This is her second weekly award this season and the seventh of her career.
