Knights Fall at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The Neumann University field hockey team suffered a 4-0 loss at Widener University on Wednesday evening.
 
The Pride scored all four goals in the third quarter, with the rest of the game played evenly.
 
The first quarter between the Knights and Widener ended scoreless. The Pride and Neumann remained locked in a defensive battle throughout the second quarter, with neither team able to break the deadlock. Widener had two early penalty corners, Meghan Sheldrick tested Widener goalkeeper but could not break the plane of the net.
 
Widener took control in the third quarter with a decisive scoring flurry, scoring four goals in a seven-minute span. The Knights attempted to respond with penalty corner opportunities but were unable to convert, as Natalia Thomas and Ayla Mergen's efforts were stifled by the Widener defense.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Knights pressed offensively but were unable to break through Widener's defense. Gabriella Cappelli had a shot hit the post and later forced a save from Widener's goalkeeper. Mergen led multiple penalty corner attempts for Neumann, with one of her shots saved.
 
Cappelli recorded two shots, with one on target, contributing to the offensive efforts for the Knights. Jamie Reed made a crucial defensive save, preventing a potential goal against Neumann. Mergen was active on the attack, posting two shots on goal. In the net, Caley Gee played 60 minutes and made three saves, facing seven shots in total.
 
Neumann (6-5) opens Atlantic East action on Saturday when it hosts Manhattanville. Action is slated to get underway at 1:00 PM with the senior ceremony prior to the start.
