PITTSTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Hockey team scored the game-winning goal with 38 seconds remaining in the third period to defeat King's College in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game on Friday night, 3-2.
The Knights got on the board first, 4:23 into the game.
Sammie Haun won an offensive zone faceoff back to
Paige Russell. She moved to the center of the ice and fired in her first collegiate goal, making it a 1-0 game. A lead that would go in the first intermission.
At the 11:19 mark of the second, Neumann doubled their advantage with a power play goal.
Valerie Wheeler received the puck on the board and threw a shot towards goal that found it's way through for the first goal of her collegiate career, and a 2-0 lead. The lead didn't last long as King's scored in the power play 57 seconds later. They tied the game 13 seconds after that on an even strength goal.
The deadlock lasted into the late stages of regulation despite the Knights outshooting the Monarchs by an 11-4 margin in the third period and 37-21 in the game. Just when it felt like the game would go to overtime,
Charlotte Labre moved off the boards into the top of the left circle and whistled in her first goal of the campaign with 37 seconds remaining.
Chloe Ballew and
Gia Santorello got assists as the Knights closed out their first win of the season.
Ballew led with nine shots on goal. Labre had seven and
Kenna Sanders had five. Labre was also a faceoff force as she won all 10 draws she took. Haun, in addition to her two assists went 10-4 in the circle.
Neumann (1-6, 1-4 MAC) will look to sweep the weekend's two-game series against King's College with a road match on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
