ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team used five runs in the eighth inning to hand Marymount University its first Atlantic East loss of the season on Tuesday afternoon, winning 10-8.
All nine batters for the Knights reached back with seven reaching on hits and the other two drawing walks.
Jack Valentine started the game on the mound and went 5.0 innings in the no decision.
Chris Balshuweit pitched 4.0 innings in relief and improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Knights opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Anthony Rakotz and
Brandon Colon hit back-to-back singles to open the inning.
Thomas Carroll then hit a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error, which allowed Rakotz to score. Colon scored on a balk and Carroll scored on a single by
Joe Boccio for a 3-0 Neumann lead.
The Saints scored two runs in the top of the second and third to take a 4-3 advantage. With one out in the bottom of the third, Boccio hit a solo home run to tie the game at four. Marymount answered with two runs in the top of the fourth for a 6-4 game.
The Knights pulled back to within one in the fifth as Carroll doubled and scored on a single by
Andrew Brown. The Saints added another run in the sixth for a 7-5 score.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kilmer walked with one out and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt.
AJ Nardo hit a pinch-hit RBI single to score Kilmer and pull the Knights within one.
Josh Finger singled, and
Donovan Brooks walked to load the bases. Rakotz stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run single to put Neumann in the lead, 8-7. Carroll hit a two-out, two-RBI triple to give the Knights a 10-7 advantage heading into the top of the ninth.
With one out, the Saint hit a homerun and put runners on second and third. Balshuweit struck out the next batter and then got the final out with a line drive, caught by Nardo in left field.
Neumann (16-8, 6-3 Atlantic East) will host Rosemont for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon beginning at 12:00 PM.
