ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Lacrosse team upended Marywood University in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 23-10.
Alena Catka led the offensive attack with seven goals and two assists. She also had five draw controls, tying
Lindsey Fagan. Fagan contributed a hat trick and
Cionni Warrington scored four times. Defensively,
Maggie Miller,
Gia Caso,
Molly Schmeltzer, and
Rex Thenor caused two turnovers each.
Murphy set the tone for the game, scoring the opening goal for the Knights at 14:25, assisted by
Cassidy Starner. This was quickly followed by another goal from Murphy at 10:54, capitalizing on a woman-up situation. Geibler scored twice in the quarter, including a critical goal at 3:44, while assisting Warrington's goal at 2:37 as Neumann finished the first on a three-goal run to close the quarter up 6-3.
The second quarter began with Catka picking up a key ground ball, leading to a Starner goal at 11:01 with an assist from Catka. Despite Marywood's effort to reply, the Knights maintained momentum with consecutive draws controlled by
Maggie Miller, setting up Warrington's woman-up goal assisted by Murphy at 8:32. Catka scored twice, at 6:25 and 4:05, with Fagan and Warrington scoring in-between, extending the Knights' edge. Fagan's free position goal at 2:07 and Catka's woman-up goal at 00:39 capped a successful quarter for Neumann, securing a commanding lead of 15-7 by the end of the half.
Warrington opened the scoring for the Knights just 18 seconds into the third with a woman-down goal assisted by Catka. Miller and Catka each added goals, with Catka's second coming after a timely ground ball pickup and assist from Murphy. The Knights continued to dominate, as they blanked the Pacers, increasing their lead to 20-7. Catka and Geibler opened the scoring in the fourth before Marywood went on a three-goal stretch. Miller notched the final goal of the game with six seconds left.
With today's win, Neumann (9-8, 4-1) earned the second seed in the Atlantic East Conference tournament. They will host No. 3 seeded Marywood on Saturday at a time to be determined.
