Women’s Lacrosse Surges to Atlantic East Final

ASTON/CHESTER, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Lacrosse team had to battle with a power outage and a tough Marywood University squad, picking up a 18-14 win on Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic East Conference semi-finals.

Cassidy Starner led the Knights with four goals and four assists. Neve Murphy added four goals and two assists while Lindsey Fagan had a strong two-way game with two goals, three assists, to go with 13 draw controls and five ground balls. Maggie Miller and Kenna Sanders starred defensively with three caused turnovers each. Abbey Fenton made 10 saves in goal.

The first 3:20 of the game went scoreless but the Knights opened things up with a 5-0 run over the next 6:17. Starner and Murphy had two goals each and the run was started by Cionni Warrington. Marywood responded 25 seconds later and added another goal at 4:26, and they were able to pull withing three.

The Pacers continued their run with a woman-up goal at 14:17, and a woman-down goal at 8:34, getting within one. 15 seconds later, Fagan ended their push with Murphy following at the 5:37 mark to take a 7-4 lead. Marywood nabbed one last goal in the half as the Knights led by two at the break.

Marywood scored the first goal of the second half just 28 seconds in, pulling within one, but played would be halted as a town-wide power outage blanked the clocks. The decision was made to move the game to Widener University, and thanks to their cooperation, and the quick work of the off-field staff, the game was able to continue a short time later.

When the game resumed, the Pacers held on to the momentum and with two straight woman-up goals in 42 seconds, they took their first lead of the game at 8-7. For the next 10 minutes, both teams traded goals. Starner and Miller each scored twice and with 2:05 remaining, the Pacers led 12-11. Alena Catka notched two goals in 27 seconds to give the Knights the lead for good.

Warrington led off the fourth with an unassisted goal and Marywood came right back with a goal, but Neumann was able to pull away. Starting at the 11:26 mark, the Knights scored four goals in eight minutes with Murphy, Fagan, and Catka striking twice, giving them a five-goal edge. Marywood got one close with 2:18 remaining but that would close the game.

Neumann (10-8) will now advance to the Atlantic East Conference championship game against either Marymount or Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday, May 3rd.
