ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team took both ends of an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader against Marywood University on Sunday afternoon by scores of 9-2 and 8-5. Along the way,
Donovan Brooks broke the program record for most stolen bases in a single season.
JerVal Shuler led the way on game one going 2 for 4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
Brandon Colon was 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs, while
Josh Finger was 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. As part of the big inning, Brooks picked up his 34
th stolen base of the season, rising above Cam Stimpson '14 and Shawn Vega '23 for the most in a single season in Neumann history.
After a scoreless first, Neumann took charge in the second as Shuler got the Knights on the board with a two-run single.
AJ Nardo also hit a two-run single, and
Anthony Rakotz scored on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Marywood responded with a two-run home run that sailed over the left field fence.
In the fifth, Shuler hit an RBI single, Finger hit an RBI double, and Brooks hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 8-2. The Knights added one more run in the sixth as B. Colon plated a run on an RBI single.
Jack Valentine earned the win, improving to 2-1. He went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four.
Josh Lillis earned the save, his first of the season, by hurling the last 2.2 innings. He spread out three hits and a walk and struck out four.
Thomas Carroll was the star of game two as he went 3 for 4 with a double, four runs batted in, and two runs scored. Nardo was 1 for 2 with a walk, a hit by pitch, and three runs. B. Colon also was key in driving in two runs.
This game was more of a back-and-forth affair as the Pacers got on the board in the top of the first with an RBI double and an RBI single, both into left field, for the early lead. In the bottom of the inning, Carroll doubled in two runs to tie the game.
Joe Boccio followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Carroll, and Neumann had the lead after one.
Marywood got right back on top in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly, and a run scoring play on an attempted steal. Again, the Knights had an answer in the bottom of the inning, tying the game on a throwing error on a failed pickoff. In the fifth, an RBI single gave the Pacers the edge, but Carroll plated a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, equalizing the game at five.
In the seventh, with runners on the corners, Carroll gave Neumann the lead for good on a bunt single, scoring Brooks. They picked up two important insurance runs when B. Colon doubled down the right field line, scoring two.
Cam Leighton got the win in relief to improve his record to 4-1. He allowed a hit and a walk, striking out one in three innings of work.
Chris Balshuweit earned his third save of the season, giving up just a hit in the ninth inning.
Neumann (23-8, 9-3 Atlantic East) will look to extend their eight game winning streak on Tuesday when they visit Cairn University for a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon for a 3:30 PM start.
