GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team used a five-run ninth inning to stun Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 5-1.
Anthony Rakotz led the Knights, hitting 3 for 5 with a double and two runs batted in.
Jack Valentine was solid on the mound, shutting out the Griffins in his five innings of work for the no-decision. He allowed three hits and walked two while fanning four.
Cam Leighton gave up just one unearned run over four innings, giving up three hits and walking one. He improves his personal record to 3-1.
It was a true pitcher's duel to start as both teams went scoreless over the first five innings. Gwynedd Mercy was able to finally start the scoring as they plated a run on a throwing error. Neumann was finally able to break through in the top of the ninth as they sent 11 men to the plate.
Joe Boccio led off with a double to the left centerfield gap and then moved to third on a fly out.
Andrew Brown reached first on a dropped third strike and an error, putting runners on the corners.
Josh Finger reached on an error, allowing Boccio to score to tie the game. After

Thomas Elgrim gave the Knights the lead with an RBI single. Two batters later, Rakotz broke the game open with a two-run single to right. Pinch runner
Tyler Kilmer closed the scoring on an error.
Neumann (14-6, 4-1) will look for the series sweep on Thursday afternoon when they once again host Gwynedd Mercy University. First pitch is scheduled for a 3:30 PM start.
