ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University Women's Lacrosse dropped a 15-14 overtime heartbreaker against Marymount University in an Atlantic East Conference game on Wednesday afternoon.
Alena Catka led the Knights with five goals while
Cionni Warrington contributed four.
Krista Geibler added two goals, and one assist and
Lindsey Fagan scored two goals. Defensively,
Maggie Miller, Geibler, and Catka had four caused turnovers each.
Neumann started the first quarter strong with Fagan scoring the first goal just 29 seconds in from a free position attempt. Catka and Geibler added to the lead with goals at 11:15 and 8:51, respectively, both also from free position shots. After giving up a goal at the 1:24 mark, the Knights capped the quarter with another goal by Geibler at 00:35, closing the first 15 minutes with a 5-2 lead.
The second quarter began with a woman-down goal by Fagan at 14:03, capitalizing on a ground ball pickup she made just moments before. Marymount responded with three straight goals, taking a 6-2 deficit down to one, prompting a timeout by Neumann at 6:40. In the final minute, Catka scored a man-up goal with an assist from Murphy with 39 seconds left, making it a 7-5 lead at the break.
The Knights began the third quarter by quickly capitalizing on a turnover as Catka scored a goal at 13:30, assisted by
Cassidy Starner, followed by Warrington's quick goal just 20 seconds later, both facilitated by
Maggie Miller's effective draw controls. Marymount scored four of the next five goals, with Warrington striking in the middle as Neumann's lead went down to one.
The Saints scored the first two goals of the fourth over the first three minutes, but Neumann responded with Warrington's goal from a free position shot at 11:12. Catka scored twice in the quarter at 05:46 and again at 03:29, the latter assisted by Geibler. In the final minute, with the game even at 13, Miller, with an assist from Catka, scored with 29 seconds left.
Marymount answered with a goal with three seconds left to force overtime. With 5:11 left in the extra session, the Saints sealed the win.
Neumann (6-8, 1-1 Atlantic East) will be back on the field on Saturday when they visit Gwynedd Mercy University for a 1:00 PM start.
