ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Softball team has qualified for the Atlantic East Conference postseason tournament and will start their run on Saturday, May 3
rd.
Neumann earned the fourth and final seed on the virtue of their 5-5 conference record. They were tied with both Immaculata and Gwynedd Mercy but, thanks to the conference tie-breaker rules, Immaculata earned third seed and Gwynedd Mercy finished out of the tournament. Both Marymount and Marywood were atop the standings with identical 7-3 records, but Marymount earned the top spot due to their regular season sweep of No. 2 Marywood.
The tournament will begin with a matchup between the Knights and Saints., at 11:00 AM. Marywood and Immaculata will follow at 1:00 PM. In this double-elimination format, the teams that lose their opening games will play at 3:00 PM with the loser being eliminated. At 5:00 PM, the two winners will clash.
On Sunday, May 4
th, game 5 will have the winner of game 3 against the loser of game 4. The winner advances to face the winner of game 4. If both teams after game 6 are 2-1, a deciding game 7 will be played.
Neumann's regular season meeting against Marymount was a tightly contested split as the Knights took the open, 2-1 in eight innings, but fell in the finale, 10-9. Neumann also split against Immaculata, winning game one, 6-4, but dropping game two, 10-2. The Knights were swept by Marywood by scores of 1-0 and 4-0.
The Knights are led offensively by
Emily Ammon and her .313 batting average. She's picked up three doubles, four triples, 12 runs batted in, and 23 runs scored. Her 31 stolen bases is the most in a single-season in program history.
Alexis Palombi has a .306 average with eight doubles, two triples, 20 RBI, and 16 runs scored.
Marina Costello also has 20 RBI to go with a home run, six doubles, and 13 runs scored.
Costello has also been a key contributor in the circle with a team best 2.31 earned run average. In 75.2 innings, she's allowed 25 earned runs on 84 hits and 28 walks while striking out 65.
Sydney Wright has pitched 71 innings, allowing 57 earned runs while fanning 39.
Olivia Ammon has given up 48 earned runs on 83 hits and just 12 walks, striking out 21 in 48.1 innings.
The tournament will be held at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. and is hosted by Marymount University.
