ASTON, Pa. — The Neumann University field hockey team picked up an exciting 3-2 overtime victory over Albright College on Wednesday evening.
After a quiet first quarter by both teams, action started to pick up in quarter number two. The Knights had two penalty corners but could not convert either. The Lions scored the lone goal in the 29
th minute and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Knights held the pace in the third quarter, earning multiple penalty corners.
Ayla Mergen set up three corners in the span of three minutes, with
Jess Silver's attempt blocked in the 37
th minute. A few minutes later, Neumann tied the game at one as
Natalie Hackett scored in the 40
th minute, off an assist by
Meghan Sheldrick.
The fourth quarter began with Neumann applying pressure, earning three penalty corners in quick succession, though the Knights were unable to capitalize. Albright took advantage of its penalty corner in the 54
th minute to take a 2-1 advantage midway through the fourth.
Two minutes later, the Knights were awarded penalty stroke.
Cadence Conti evened the score as she put the ball in the back of the cage. Despite a flurry of attempts from
Gabriella Cappelli, including a blocked shot in the 59
th minute, the teams headed to overtime.
It took the Knights just 34 seconds to score the game-winning goal. After a penalty corner, the ball bounced around in front of the net when Mergen put the ball in the cage for the 3-2 win. Cappelli tallied the assist on the game-winner.
The Knights outshot the Lions 10-4 overall and 5-3 on net.
Caley Gee made one save to pick up the win. Neumann drew 10 penalty corners to Albrights two.
Neumann (2-2) will host Hood College on Saturday morning, beginning at 11:00 AM.
