WILKES-BARRE, PA. – The Neumann University Field Hockey team took a trip up the Northeast Extension on Friday night, upending King's College in a non-conference game by a final score of 3-1.
King's got on the board on a penalty corner just over three minutes into the match. The rest of the quarter was quiet until the Knights earned a penalty corner with under a minute to go. The ball was inserted by
Ayla Mergen and
Gabriella Cappelli took the pass at the top of the circle and blasted in her second goal of the season, tying the game at one.
Neumann started to take some possessive command in the second quarter and that helped them take the lead with just over seven minutes left on the clock. After a steal in the midfield, the Knights worked the ball quickly into the circle. After an initial shot was blocked,
Rachel Roane found a loose ball on pushed it home for her first collegiate goal.
The third quarter went scoreless as neither team could threaten the goal. With 4:44 left in regulation, Neumann was awarded a penalty stroke and
Cadence Conti rolled the ball into the corner of the goal for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. That was also her third penalty stroke goal of the season, tying her own program record from last season.
Cappelli ended the game with five shots, two of them on goal. Mergen added three shots and Roane had two.
Caley Gee needed just one save to earn the win in goal. Tonight's win over the Monarchs is their first in 13 meetings since 2004.
Neumann (4-3) will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Arcadia for a 4:00 PM start.
