ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season, 3-0, over Wilkes University on Wednesday evening in the home opener.
Bri Gautier and
Julia Solomon each had nine kills in the match. Gautier finished with a .615 hitting percentage while Solomon hit .316.
Melissa Eddy and
Soleil-La'Jour Staggs each added seven kills.
Kyla Sayson handed out 17 assists and
Liv Bowers tallied 12. Eddy added 11 digs. Staggs notched a block solo and four block assists.
Neumann built a 17-12 advantage in set one when Wilkes scored six straight points to take a 18-17 advantage. The Knights answered with three points to take back the lead. The teams then traded points and were knotted at 22 when a kill by Solomon put Neumann back in the lead. A service ace by Sayson sealed the 25-22 first set win.
The Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start set two. Neumann continued to build its lead throughout set two to come away with the 25-17 win. The Knights jumped out early in set three as well, leading 6-1. With a 14-7 score, the Colonels scored four straight points for a 14-11 set. Wilkes wouldn't pull any closer and the Knights sealed the win, 25-20.
Neumann (1-4) will host the annual Knights Invitational this weekend. The Knights will face Rowan on Friday evening beginning at 7:00 PM.
