Men’s Hockey Suffers Tough Loss at Cougars

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game against Misericordia on Saturday night on a late strike.

Neumann started the scoring with 10:43 left in the first period as Zack Smith found the puck in tight, threw a couple of dekes, and notched a power play goal for a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second, Misericordia nabbed their own power play goal as a wrist shot from the point found the mark just 2:23 into the frame. Six and a half minutes later, a snapper from the top of the circle gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead. 58 seconds later, Jared Coccimiglio took a shot from the point that clanged off the glass but hit Misericordia's goalie in the back and landed in the goal for his eighth goal of the year, tying the game at two.

The Knights carried much of the play in the third period and their efforts finally yielded a goal with 9:53 left in regulation. After a face-off win, the puck was worked back to the point where Tyler Ray pushed a shot towards goal that was deflected in by Smith for his second of the game and 11th of the season. Jake Barkley grabbed the secondary assist. With 3:21 left in the third, Misericordia tied the game after an odd man rush. 1:50 later, with a 5-on-3 power play, the Cougars took the lead on a wrist shot from the top of the slot, finishing the weekend sweep.

Coccimiglio led the Knights with eight shots on goal as they outshot the Cougars by a 45-20 margin. Smith and Judd Katz picked up five shots each. Coccimiglio also doubled up his face-off opponents by winning 14 and only dropping seven. Matt Perdue got the start in goal, making 16 saves.

Neumann (10-7-1, 9-4-1 MAC) will be back in action on Friday for a Senior Night match-up against Arcadia University starting at 7:00 PM.
