Men’s Hockey Wins Tight Battle with Alvernia

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Hockey team picked up a gritty 3-2 win over Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game at the IceWorks Skating Complex.

Neumann got on the scoreboard first with 6:45 left in the first period when Dexton Mozell deposited the rebound from a Tyler Kennedy shot for his first goal of the season. Tony Andrews earned the secondary assist as they took a 1-0 lead. At the 16:07 mark, the Golden Wolves tied the game up after a scramble in the crease.

55 seconds into the second, Alvernia took a 2-1 lead on a deflected shot. With 15:18 left in the middle period, the Knights moved in the offensive zone on a 2-on-1. Lucas Culhane fought through a stick check, slipped over the blue line, and passed across to Zack Smith. He wasted little time wristing in his team and conference-leading 12th goal of the season, tying the game at two. Both teams continued to push the pace and with 14:21 left in the period, the Golden Wolves were awarded a penalty shot but Christian Green made the save to keep the game even. With 5:06 left, Max Donohoe found the rebound from a Culhane shot and swept in his third goal of the weekend, and ninth of the season. In spite a combined 41 shot attempts, the game would go scoreless for the duration. In the final seconds, Alvernia got a short breakaway, but Culhane stick lifted the puck away to secure the win.

Donohoe and Shawn Eliav led the attack with five shots on goal each. Matt Dimaline went 14-9 in the face-off dot while Jake Barkley won eight of 12. TJ Ezzard had a strong game on the blue line with three blocked shots. Green finished the game with 29 saves between the pipes.

Neumann (12-7-1, 11-4-1 MAC) moved back into first place in the conference with today's win. They'll return to the ice on Friday night when they host Wilkes University for a 7:00 PM
