ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Volleyball team suffered a 3-1 decision at the hands of Cairn University on Tuesday night.
Neumann fell behind quickly in the first set as Cairn started with the first six points. The Knights got four of the next six but another 5-0 run against them made it a 13-4 deficit. A 7-2 run allowed Neumann to pull within four at 15-11. They were able to stay within striking distance but fell 25-20.
The second set was a tight affair with neither team leading by more than two points at any stage. The biggest run for Neumann was when they trailed 12-11 and they scored three in a row for a 14-12 lead. The Knights had a 20-18 lead, but the Highlander ratted off four straight to lead 22-20. They were on the brink late, trailing 24-23 but scored another three in a row to clinch the set and tie the match.
Cairn started the third much like the first, with a big run, this time, 7-1. Neumann trailed by five at 16-11 but they traded three point runs to get the match to 19-17. They were able to fight off a couple of set points but fell, 25-22.
They tried to force a fifth set, starting the fourth with another tight clash. Trailing 9-7, they scored four in a row to go ahead by two. Sadly, for the Knights, Cairn responded withtheir own 4-0 run. Neumann fell behind 23-18 but fought hard to keep the match alive with a 4-0 run. It was not enough as they dropped the set, 25-22.
Trey Edmonds led the offensive attack with 18 kills and a .289 hitting percentage.
Isaiah Thomas also contributed nine kills.
Arian Santos put up 27 assists and
Christian DeMarco had 11 digs.
Neumann (1-4) will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Drew University for a 7:00 PM start.
