ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Basketball team come back from a double-digit deficit against Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell overtime by a final score of 75-74 on senior day.
Neumann got off to a solid start, leading 8-7 with 15:35 left in the first half. From there, Gwynedd Mercy took off on a 9-2 push to take a 16-10 lead. A lead that they would enjoy for most of the game. A quick five points for the Knights would be answered the Griffins own five points in a row. This trend would continue for the rest of the first half with Gwynedd Mercy leading 33-26 at the break.
Just over a minute into the second, the Griffins would make a push to extend that lead and take over the game. Over the next 2:26, they scored eight of the next ten points to bulge their lead to 10. Just before the midway point of the half, two straight three-pointer would balloon the lead to 14, the largest lead of the game. The Knights would try to chip away at their deficit starting at the 7:29 mark, scoring the next 10 point to get within three at 60-57. A fast 5-0 run for the Griffins would be the end of their scoring for regulation. Neumann notched the eight points over the last 2:36 of the second, punctuated by a
Donte Dupriest layup with eight seconds left, sending the game into overtime.
Another Dupriest layup, 17 seconds into the extra period, gave the Knights their first lead since the early going. With 2:10 left,
Izaiah Johnson Young-El hit a close in shot, getting Neumann ahead by one. After a Griffin bucket, Dupriest hit two key free throws with 52 second left to regain the lead. Sadly, for Neumann, a buzzer-beating jumper ended their afternoon in disappointment.
Dupriest led the Knights with 27 points and nine rebounds.
Bryan Etienne had 16 points and eight rebounds while Johnson Young-El finished with 14 points and four steals.
Jarell Keel led the effort on the boards with 13 rebounds.
