Baseball Falls in Back-and-Forth Affair

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team dropped a hard fought 13-12 game against Atlantic East Conference rivals, Gwynedd Mercy University on Sunday afternoon.

After a scoreless first inning, Neumann plated a couple of runs in the second on an RBI single by Yoan Feliz and a Blake Decker sacrifice fly. Gwynedd Mercy fought back in the third, thanks to two bases loaded walks, and two singles that scored three runs, for a 5-2 lead. They added one more in the fourth on an RBI single.

The Knights got within one in the bottom of the inning when Colton Shaub was issued a walk with the bases loaded and an RBI fielder's choice by Decker. A sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth gave the Griffins a two-run lead, but the Knights surged ahead in the bottom of the frame. Nick Ciesielka scored on a throwing error, Tyler Kilmer drove in two with single, and Feliz made it a 9-7 lead with an RBI double.

Gwynedd Mercy took the lead right back as three runs scored on two errors in the top of the sixth. Neumann again turned the tables in the bottom of the inning with an Andrew Brown sacrifice fly that tied the game and a Shuler RBI single that gave them a 11-10 lead. An RBI grounder evened the game at 11 in the seventh before they took the lead for good in the eight on two RBI singles.

In the ninth, Shaub led off by getting hit by a pitch and pinch hitter, Jackson Armiger walked. After a pitching change, Donovan Brooks laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to make it a second and third situation with one away. Anthony Rakotz drove in Shaub on a sacrifice fly and pinch runner, Brayden Fields moved to third on a wild pitch, but the rally stalled there.

Feliz led the way, hitting 4 for 5 with a double, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Kilmer was 3 for 4 with a walk, two RBI, and three runs, while Shuler was 3 for 5 with an RBI, and three runs scored. Rey Carrier suffered the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season. Kyle Dailey held things down in the top of the ninth, allowing a walk and two walks, while striking out two.

Neumann (6-4, 1-2 Atlantic East) will get back to action on Tuesday when they visit Penn State Abington for a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
