Knight Fall Just Short in CSAC Championship

DRIFTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team went 2-1 in day two of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

 

In the first game, the Knights stayed alive and advanced to the Championship game with a 10-0 win in six innings over Marywood University. Kim Kirkpatrick hits a three-run homerun to end the game in six innings.

 

The Knights put two runs on the board in the second and one in the third inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Neumann batted around and put four runs on the board.

 

Brittany Campbell went 6.0 innings and struck out two in the shutout.

 

In the first Championship game, Neumann defeated Centenary 10-2 in five innings to force the deciding Game 9 of the tournament.

 

The Knight's bats stayed hot as they put two runs on the board in the first inning. Kelly Goslin hit a two-run homerun in the third inning for a 4-0 lead.

 

Neumann put six runs on the board in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Deanna Christy.

 

Rachel Purpuro went 5.0 innings for the win. She allowed two unearned runs and struck out three.

 

In the final game of the Tournament, the Knights fell 11-10 in the bottom of the seventh. Each team had a five-run inning in the high-scoring affair.

 

Neumann put two runs on the board in the top of the first before a storm rolled through and caused a two-and-a-half hour rain dely.

 

When play resumed, the Cyclones put an unearned run on the board in the bottom of the second. The Knights then strung together hits and put a five-spot on the board in the top of the third. Goslin hit a solo shot in the inning. Centenary scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 7-3 Knights lead after three.

 

Centenary cut the score to 7-6 in the fourth inning. Neumann answered with two runs in the top of the fifth for a 9-6 game. The Cylclones sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and took an 11-9 lead going into the final inning.

 

Crystal Perlman hit a double with two outs in the top of the seventh to keep Neumann alive. Lauren Strack then drew a walk and Perlman moved to third on a wild pitch. Christy reached on an error and Perlman scored for an unearned run and an 11-10 game. Kim Kirkpatrick walked to load the bases. Callie Emel walked as well to force in the tying run.

 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cylclones scored the winning run with no one out on a bases loaded single.

 

Emel finished with three RBI in the game. Campbell started the game. She went 3.1+ total innings. She allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits. Purpuro went 2.0 innings in relief. She allowed seven runs, six earned, and struck out two. Goslin pitched 0.2 innings. Carley Gustin started the bottom of the seventh and took the loss.

 

Neumann is now 30-13 overall and will wait to see if its season will continue.
