ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team tied Sacred Heart University 4-4 (Overtime) in non-conference action, Sunday afternoon.
The Knights came out with a different game plan to start the first period as Sacred Heart was fast and furious on Saturday's game. Neumann stayed compact and cohesive for the first period and it paid dividends. The Knights outshot Sacred Heart 11-5, but Sacred Heart would score first to make it 1-0.
Neumann didn't lose their spirit or spunk after being down a goal. Danica Delry made a rush to the net and slapped a shot that the goalkeeper got a foot to, but the danger was not over. Kelsey Carpenter did what any good forward would do as she crashed the net and shot the rebound for a goal to tie the score 1-1.
The Knights stayed to script as Sacred Heart would poach a forward up top without much defensive responsibilities. There was a fantastic Knights defensive presence again in the second period, but Sacred Heart would strike first, midway through the period.
The Knights kept attacking as a team as well as defending as a unit. Lauren Cusack persevered locating herself in front of the net and flicked in a shot to score and tie the game at 2-2. Casey Kilduff and Keira St. Laurent assisted on the goal by Cusack.
The third period saw the Knights score two goals to take a 4-2 lead. Edie Brenning showed her skill and crafty ability as she eluded a defender and slotted the puck in the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead. Then it was Kilduff who cleaned up what Shanelle Doucette wasn't able to finish. Doucette attacked from the left wing as she rounded the corner, she released a shot that rebounded off the keeper. To the delight of Kilduff, she knocked in an easy rebound to take a 4-2 lead.
Sacred Heart made a late rally scoring with seven minutes remaining in the period and again with 2:29 remaining in the third period.
Both teams had two shots on target in overtime with neither team able to get the game winner.
Justina Mayr made 23 saves on the day.
The Knights (2-1-1, 2-0 ECAC West) are back in action as they host Oswego State Saturday, November 17 slated for a 7 p.m face-off.
