JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Neumann University baseball team defeated New Jersey City University 10-8 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Neumann capitalized on some early errors by NJC and put five unearned runs on the board in the first three innings. Joey Armata hit a two-run double in the first inning. Tyler Drinkard then hit a two run homerun in the third inning.
The Knights then put three earned runs on the board in the sixth inning, capped by a two-run single by Marty Sessa. Neumann held the 8-0 lead after six.
The Gothic Knights would not go quietly. After being held hitless until the fifth inning, the batters started to figure out the Knights pitchers in the seventh inning. NJC would take advantage of the error and scored four more runs, unearned, to tie the game at 8-all.
Both teams went down in order in their respective half of the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, Sessa led off with a single. Dave Kalash sacrificed Sessa to second, who then moved to third on a groundout. Bobby Callan bunted to the pitcher for a single and Sessa scored to put Neumann ahead, 9-8. Michael Tomeo followed with double to score Callan for an insurance run.
