DALLAS, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team lost both games 11-10 (9 innings), 11-10 (5 innings) against non-conference Misericordia University Thursday afternoon.
Game one:
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead after three innings. The Knights struck gold in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs from Becca Reinhart, Crystal Perlman, Clarissa Hayes and Nicole Zamudio.
The Cougars answered with four runs of their own, in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Crystal Perlman hit a home run in the fifth inning and the Knights would add two more runs to take a 7-5 lead.
The Knights would have an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cougars staged a comeback with one out to tie the score at 8-8 and take the game into extra innings.
The Knights scored two runs in the top of the eighth innings off runs from Zamudio and Kristin Beaty.
The Cougars showed resilience by getting two runs back in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the game and finally get a run in the ninth to win 11-10.
Rachel Purpuro pitched six innings giving up six hits and six runs. Kristin Beaty pitched one and two-thirds innings giving up five hits and four runs. Allyson Parris got the loss over two-thirds of an inning, giving up three hits and one game-winning run.
Game two
The Knights got off to a great start with a six runs second inning. Mariah Ripken hit a grand slam home run and Crystal Perlman added a two run dinger to put the Knights up 6-1 after two innings.
Nicole Zamudio knocked the ball out of the park in the third inning and the Knights took a 7-4 lead after three innings.
Alysson Parris and Katie Halter added two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 10-5 lead.
The Cougars first two hitters would hit home runs in the bottom of the fifth, as they drew closer to the Knights 10-7 lead. Sarah McGann would be relieved for Kristin Beaty. Beaty didn't have much luck, as the Cougars next three batters hit a triple, single and single. It would be a sacrifice fly that would bring in the controversial game-winning run. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning, due to darkness.
Parris went two for two at bat and Nicole Zamudio went two for three at bat with a home run. Crystal Perlman went two for four adding a home run.
Allyson Beaty would get the loss.
