Volleyball Falls in a Back and Forth Five Setter

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University volleyball team fell to Elizabethtown College 3-2 in five hard fought sets on Tuesday evening.

Neumann started the match off on the right foot, winning the first set 25-20. Elizabethtown battled back to take sets two and three, 25-23, 25-20. The Knights responded with a 25-21 win in set four to send the match to the fifth and deciding set. The Blue Jays hung on and took the fifth set 15-12 for the match.

During the five sets, the score was tied 25 times and there were eight lead changes.

During the first set, with Kat Wolf serving, the Knights took a 15-11 lead and stretched it into a 21-12 lead. The Blue Jays were not going to go quietly and clawed back to a 23-20 score. A kill by Sarah Sanderson and an attack error by Elizabethtown gave Neumann the final two points for the 25-20 first set win.

The second set went back and forth with 10 tied scores during the set. The teams were knotted at 23 before the Blue Jays were able to get the final two points this time for a 1-1 match.

The third set was much like the first, except Elizabethtown came out with the 25-20 win. The Blue Jays took a 23-17 lead, but the Knights then notched three points to get within three, 23-20. Two E-town kills gave it the 25-20 win and a 2-1 lead.

In set four, the Knights went out to a 19-11 lead. Neumann was able to get set point, 24-17, but Elizabethtown did not want to go to a fifth set. The Blue Jays scored four points for a 24-21 set, before committing a service error to give the Knights their 25th point and set the match to a fifth a decisive set.

Set five was no different than the first four, except the teams had to only get to 15 points. The Blue Jays were the first to eight points to switch sides, but the switch was coming as the set was 8-7. The teams were still neck and neck as the score became 12-all. The Blue Jays were able to notched three straight points, to take the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Anna Waltz led the Knights with 16 kills. Kelsey D'Imperio had 15 and Faith Cook notched 13. Wolf handed out 47 assists while getting 23 digs. Julia Malseed added 19 digs with Waltz tallying 17 and Danielle Kwapisz adding 15.

Neumann (6-3) opens conference action this weekend beginning at Centenary on Friday evening and then hosts Marywood on Saturday afternoon.
