Men's Hockey Scores a Dozen in Season Opening Win

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team opened the 2015-16 season with a convincing 12-1 win against Daniel Webster College on Friday evening.

Seven Knights had more than a point in the game. Shayne Morrissey tallied a hat trick and an assist. Mike Davis had two goals and two assists. Ryan Luiten added two goals and an assist. Steve Low had a goal and three assists. Jon Low and Nick Perruccio each added a goal and two assists. Jory Mullin dished out two assists.

Matt Gibney made 17 saves in net for the win between the pipes. The Knights outshot the Eagles 49-18. Neumann went 4-for-6 on the man-advantage.

Luiten didn't wait too long to score Neumann's first goal of the season, finding the back of the net 2:44 into the game. The junior scored his second goal of the game three minutes later. Mullin and Davis tallied the assists on Luiten's goals.

Brandon Gagne scored at the 7:26 mark of the first period. Connor Annett handed out his first collegiate assist. Perruccio scored on the power play, off a pass from S. Low at the 11:02 mark. S. Low then intercepted a pass and scored a goal of his own.

Daniel Webster scored its lone goal of the game at the 15:19 mark, spoiling the shutout bid. Neumann answered just 16 seconds later as Davis scored off a pass from Casey Rogers. After the first 20 minutes, the Knights led 6-1.

Morrissey scored all three of his goals in the second period. His first goal came just 1:37 into the period. Davis scored his second goal of the game at the 4:17 mark. Morrissey then scored at the 12:07 and 14:15 marks, with assists from S. Low and J. Low, for his hat trick. After two periods, Neumann led 10-1.

J. Low found the back of the net as he tipped in a shot 3:46 into the third period. Zac Lazzaro rounded out the scoring at the 5:01 mark as he received a pass and drove down the wing.

With the win, first year head coach Matt Tendler picked up his first win behind the bench. Neumann (1-0) will host Salve Regina tomorrow afternoon beginning at 4:00 PM.
