2015 will see the Neumann University Club Baseball team competing for the first time in the National Club Baseball Association (NCBA). The Knights, led by Head Coach Scott Hammel, will look to carry on the University's proud baseball culture that has been established by the NCAA program over the past five years. The team will hit the ground running looking to compete for the District II South title in its first year of existence.
Â
Junior
Kelvin Ortiz and Freshman
Jon Harris will lead the team as captains in 2015. Ortiz will take experience gained with the Division III program over the past two seasons and apply it to be the sparkplug in the Knights offense this season. Harris looks to carry his success as an outfielder at Concord HS (Wilmington, DE) into collegiate competition as he'll man the grass in center field as well as handle lead-off duties.
Â
The meat of the lineup should produce runs early and often for Neumann in 2015. Ortiz, along with Senior Jordan Martinez, and Freshman
Michael Schintz carry heavy bats that are due to drive a few balls over the wall this season. The two corner infielders, Martinez and Schintz, are definitive four and five hitters, respectively.
Â
Defensively, the Knights will be solid in the infield with the fundamental play of
Luke Falkenberg and the quick hands of Matt Giambri. The two freshmen will handle duties in the middle infield behind what is sure to be a young, yet electric pitching staff. Mike Carbonara and
Paul Cavanaugh will be joined by transfer Jeff Dellafranco and sophomore Brad Lee to handle much of the starting responsibilities on the bump in 2015. For the other half of the battery,
Brent Theriault will handle much of the duties behind the plate for the Knights this season. The strong-armed sophomore is defensive minded, but his bat will also give opposing pitchers problems.
