Seven Knights Earn Atlantic East Recognition

HADDONFIELD, N.J. – The Atlantic East Conference announced their weekly awards on Monday afternoon, and Neumann University student-athletes accounted for seven awards. Ellie Zarnawski was named the Softball Player of the Week while her teammate, Marina Costello was named to the weekly Honor Roll. Baseball's Cam Leighton was named the Pitcher of the Week with Donovan Brooks got on the Honor Roll. Additionally, Sam Knight and Ava Valente from Women's Flag Football, and Men's Lacrosse's Connor Hurley were also named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
 
Zarnawski hit .500 (11-for-22) as Neumann opened its season 5-5. Three of the first year's hits went for doubles. She also scored seven runs and knocked in four while walking three times. Zarnawski got her first collegiate hit at her first plate appearance. Her first two RBI came on a double to tie the game at four against Simmons. Neumann went on to win 12-8.
 
Leighton went 1-0 in two relief appearances as the baseball team opened the season 4-1. In five innings pitched, he allowed three hits, no earned runs, and struck out four. In his first appearance, the senior pitched a 1-2-3 inning against Elmira and struck out one. He followed with four innings and picked up an 11-7, 11-inning win over St. Joseph's – Long Island. He allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out three.
 
Costello went 2-1 in the circle for softball this past week. The graduate student had a 1.78 ERA in 19.2 innings and struck out 22. In her first start of the season, Costello went three scoreless innings. Her first win came when she pitched four innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits while striking out nine in a 13-1 win over Chatham. Costello followed with 5.2 scoreless innings in relief where she struck out five. In the final game of the week, Costello pitched a complete game, six innings for the 11-3 win over Alvernia. She struck out six. This is the sixth weekly award of her Neumann career and third weekly Honor Roll award.
 
Brooks hit .538 (7-for-13) in the four games he played. The junior scored eight runs, knocked in two, drew three walks and was hit by a pitch five times. He was also 10-for-10 in stolen bases. In an 11-7 win over St. Joseph's Long Island, he went 3-for-4, scored three runs and stole six bases. His six steals are a single-game record for the Knights, breaking his own record set last year.
 
Knight had 10 tackles and two interceptions as Women's Flag Football opened its season with two wins against Penn State Schuylkill and Marywood.
 
Valente completed 41 of 60 passes for 485 yards and 11 touchdown passes in the two games against Penn State Schuylkill and Marywood. She also ran for 172 yards.
 
Hurley scored two goals, added four assists and five ground balls in two games for Men's Lacrosse. The senior had two goals and two assists in the home opener against Misericordia. He followed with two goals at Alvernia.
